The tuba has been known since the first half of the 19th century and was immediately incorporated into symphony orchestras. It originated from an instrument called "oficleide", which was a key horn that is previous to the invention of the piston system. It began to be used in bands of small metals, mainly in Great Britain, where previously was used an instrument called helicon (that in turn gave origin to sousafone).
The tubing mechanism may be pistons or valves (rotors), which change the sound as the air travels through the instrument by opening or closing metal tubes. The valves are more present in the professional tubas or the larger ones. Most tubas have 3 or 4 pistons or valves, and the 4th has the role of adding a 4th to the note played.
