The bass clarinet is an aerophone belonging to the clarinet family. It has a shape that somewhat resembles a tenor saxophone but thinner and longer. In general it has a spigot to support the instrument on the floor, but can be touched standing with a strap holder.
It is an instrument transpositor (the music for bass clarinet is written in an octave different from the octave of its real sound). It is usually tuned in B flat, sounding an octave below the clarinet in B flat.
Like the clarinet, the bass clarinet is a simple vane instrument, but the mouthpiece and vane are larger, the size of those of the tenor saxophone. The most serious note that it produces can be the E flat1 in certain models or the C1 in others.
