The body of the instrument is usually made of metal, but some builders offer timp toms made of maple or other wood. The heads are light and tuned in an high sound considering their size.
They are mounted in pairs, and played standing, with drumsticks. The head diameter ranges from 12 to 16 inches, with the pairs generally having a difference of one inch in diameter between each drum.
