Also the word cowbell is used to designate hollow vessel instruments with small objects inside. They are part of the family of cowbell: maracas, ganzá, caxixi and many others. It is also used to designate a bell or bell that is placed on the neck of oxen, sheep or goats. The artisanal manufacture of this bells is called Arte Chocalheira and has been recognized since 2015 by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The cowbell is used in Brazil in samba and bossa nova. It is seen in the samba schools that parade in the Carnival.
