The flugelhorn is a wind instrument belonging to the metal family and somewhat similar to a trumpet, but with a larger and more open bell than the trumpet.
It was conceived by the military, having as function to transmit orders to the cavalry and infantry, just like the traditional military horns. The initial instrument was in the form of a half-moon and with keys, having evolved to the present form similar to the trumpet, with pistons.
The tone is softer and velvety than that of the trumpet and tuned in B flat.
The best-known jazz musician to use the flugelhorn is trumpeter Chet Baker, who even recorded a record with this instrument. Also Freddie Hubbard, Clark Terry and Shorty Rogers use flugelhorn.
