The American Banjo (also known as a 5 string banjo or bluegrass banjo) is a stringed instrument with a metallic or circular wood body cov ered by a natural or synthetic skin stretched out, and a long, narrow neck. It has 5 strings, the sharpest string having a tuning mechanism itself, located in the middle of the arm.
The instrument is usually played with a thumb-nail and two metal nails on the index and middle fingers (especially bluegrass). There are, however, other techniques of playing, such as the clawhammer, which is performed with the hand almost closed, without nails.
This type of banjo is used in bluegrass, folk and country music, being the most common Sol - Ré - Sol - Si - Ré tuning. When all the loose strings are played, a G chord is produced.
