More info

The Artimúsica 11140 8-string cavaquinho with round mouth is a traditional Portuguese instrument made by the best traditional craftsmen. For tunas and not only.

The 8-string cavaquinho is a Portuguese cordophone also known as a tuna cavaquinho. It is a very popular variation of the four-string cavaquinho, much used by student tunas, who benefit from the brighter sound of the eight strings and makes it stand out among other instruments.

The woods chosen by Artimúsica are of high quality, and have been treated for greater longevity and superior sound quality. The top is in solid spruce, and the bottom and the sides are in walnut or cherry tree. The neck is in mahogany and the scale is in panga panga (Millettia laurentii), a wood originating in Mozambique, of high hardness, resistant and aesthetically appealing.

And the Artimúsica cavaquinho 11140 is an instrument of high aesthetic quality. The top consists of two sections in different shades of wood, which contrast with the shiny finish of the sides, and the tuning machines are nickel plated. The binding has traditional motifs to further embellish the cavaquinho.

The eight - string cavaquinho can be tuned in various ways, such as the traditional cavaquinho, from the highest to the lowest  string is D - B - G -G. The cavaquinho can be tuned still in G: D - B - G - D; in A: E - C# - A - Mi; in C: Sol - Mi - Do - Do. The most generalized tuning in the Lisbon student tunas is E - C# - A - A.

These variations open up huge possibilities to integrate the cavaquinho as an accompaniment instrument or soloist in a tuna, in a set of traditional music, or in another musical style to the taste of the performer.

Founded in September 1992, Artimúsica is one of the reference brands in the traditional construction of traditional Portuguese instruments. It is a family business, which follows the method of construction started by master Joaquim José Machado, more than 100 years ago. His grandchildren, the masters Manuel Carvalho and José Carvalho, make each instrument as if it were a true work of art, making each piece unique and high quality.
